McClintock Heating and Cooling Earns Esteemed 2016 Angie’s List Super Service Award

Award reflects McClintock’s consistently high level of customer service

McClintock Heating & Cooling is proud to announce that we have earned the service industry’s coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award for the 12th consecutive year, reflecting an exemplary year of service provided to members of the local services marketplace and consumer review site in 2016.

“The 2016 Super Service Award from Angie’s List is very meaningful to our entire team,” said Rob McClintock, President of McClintock Heating and Cooling. “Total customer satisfaction is the driving force behind how all McClintock employees perform their jobs. It is a culture within our company; from the moment the phone rings, until the service or installation is completed, we make sure that superior customer service is delivered to all of our customers.”

Angie’s List Super Service Award 2016 winners have met strict eligibility requirements, which include an “A” rating in overall grade, recent grade, and review period grade; the company must be in good standing with Angie’s List, pass a background check and abide by Angie’s List operational guidelines.

“Companies that can meet higher demands without missing a beat in their exemplary performance standards truly do stand apart from their peers,” said Angie’s List Founder Angie Hicks. “Only a fraction of the heating and cooling companies in the greater Charlotte, NC area were able to do it.”

Service company ratings are updated daily on Angie’s List as new, verified consumer reviews are submitted. Companies are graded on an A through F scale in areas ranging from price to professionalism to punctuality.

For more than 21 years, Angie’s List restricted access to its verified reviews to consumers who paid membership fees. When the company removed that barrier, some companies worried that the new, non-paying members would not be as engaged as members of the past. Experience has shown, however, that these newly added members are just as engaged – across all age groups – as prior members. Also, because the company continues to adhere to its review verification process, there has been no degradation of review quality.

“The biggest change at Angie’s List is that we are connecting even more consumers to high quality service professionals,” Hicks said. “And that’s good for everyone.”

Air Conditioning Tune-up Details

Last month, we went through the reasons of why getting a yearly inspection on your air conditioning unit is imperative in the long term quality and function of the unit, but what’s just as important as “Why do I need to get my air conditioning unit inspected?” is “What are they doing out there during the inspection and why can’t I just do it myself?”

While there are certain tasks you can do throughout the year to assure that your air conditioning unit is running well, such as changing the filter and keeping the unit clear of leaves and other debris, the functions of a yearly inspection should be left to the professionals. During the 60-90 minute inspection, the technicians at McClintock Heating and Cooling will go through various safety checks and preventative maintenance measures to keep your system in top shape.

The first step of the inspection process is to do an overall assessment of the unit. Your technician will check to make sure that there is nothing interfering with the air flow such as foliage or other items like a grill or patio furniture. From there, the outdoor coil will be inspected for heat transfer loss and they will also be cleaned. The fans will be both inspected and cleaned, as well, while the exposed ductwork will be checked for any leaks. Other items checked during this process include drains, relays, contractors, and the indoor coils.

During the inspection, other parts of the air conditioner are inspected with a little more detail. The refrigerant will be checked for proper charge to be sure that there are no leaks. The unit’s thermostats will be checked and calibrated if needed – an essential function for a home to be kept at a comfortable temperature. Air filters are also inspected, and if the customer requests, they will be replaced.

At the end of this process, your McClintock Heating and Cooling technician will provide you with an inspection report that details the state of your unit and the inspection results. This is a great time to ask your technician any questions that you may have regarding the heating or cooling of your home!

Spring Cleaning for Your Air Conditioner

During what had been a winter of record breaking proportions, it sometimes seemed as if the season would never end. Lately, however, we’ve been teased with some warmer temperatures and by looking at the calendar, it’s clear to see that spring has arrived. For as much snow, ice and cold temperatures as Charlotte received this year, we will no doubt forget about it all once temperatures and humidity start to creep higher and higher. The cool interiors of our homes serve as an oasis in the southern summer heat, so the changing seasons are a good reminder to get your air conditioners tuned up in order to keep your home cool and comfortable through all of the warmer months.

As we discussed last fall, it’s easy to lament and wonder why we must keep everything in our lives maintained…including our heating and cooling units. Just as it’s often times easy to skip a dentist appointment, it’s no doubt tempting to not schedule a yearly air conditioning tune-up. But just as skipped dental appointments can turn minor cavities into root canals, missing yearly air conditioning tune-ups can turn small problems into a hefty repair bill.

A yearly tune-up with McClintock Heating & Cooling will provide a multitude of benefits for your air conditioning unit and home as a whole. The maintenance performed by the technicians at McClintock Heating & Cooling during the inspection will not only improve the system’s efficiency, but will also prevent breakdowns and extend it’s life. The yearly tune-up also provides benefits that the whole family can enjoy – a well running and maintained air conditioning unit delivers comfortable and consistent temperatures throughout the entire home.

Perhaps the best benefit of a yearly air conditioning inspection with McClintock Heating & Cooling, is the peace of mind that you’ll have going into the warm months, knowing that your system is ready for the heat that is ahead!

Benefits of Whole-Home Humidity

Dry throat, chapped skin, static cling. Most of us know all too well that these are the results that sometimes occur while running the heat inside your home during the winter. While you may see these side effects as minor inconveniences, did you know that if the humidity level in your home goes below 30%, that the results could be more than just “minor?” Existing health conditions such as allergies and asthma can be exacerbated, while porous materials in your home, like moldings and hardwood floors, can be damaged. But by bringing your home’s humidity to its optimum level, your health and the contents of your home will only benefit!

We’re all familiar with portable humidifiers that can be placed throughout a home or office to provide humidity during the cold weather months. These humidifiers range in size to provide humidity to space as small as an office cubicle to large enough to service several rooms. However, portable humidifiers have proven to be an inconvenience and a health hazard at the same time. Not only do you have to replenish the water in the machine daily, but precautions must be made to keep the reservoir extremely clean, as bacteria can form and be sprayed into the air by the humidifier.

The better alternative to the portable humidifier is a whole-house humidifier. While many whole- house humidifiers operate only when the heating system is running, the technicians at McClintock Heating and Cooling install steam humidifiers in the homes of their customers. The Honeywell TrueSTEAM provides humidity to homes up to 3,000 square feet while using significantly less water than other whole-house humidifiers, making it eco-friendly. And as for the health of those inside of your home, TrueSTEAM produces a “true steam,” hence the name, eradicating any opportunity for bacteria growth.

Installation of the whole-house humidifier takes approximately 4-6 hours. During this time, your McClintock Heating and Cooling technician will install the humidifier either directly on your furnace or remotely up to 20 feet away. In most cases, your technician will also install a new thermostat that will control both the heating and cooling of the home as well as the humidity, eliminating the need to have multiple controls taking up space on your walls.

As for maintenance, it really does not get much easier! Once the spring hits, the humidifier will be shut down and drained in preparation for the already humid summer months. Depending on the hardness of your water, the humidifier will only need cleaned and maintained once per year, which can take place during your yearly furnace maintenance (insert link of maintenance blog post). Once the unit is cleaned and any mineralization removed, your humidifier will be ready to provide comfort to your home for another winter!

The Yearly Check-Up

One question that is often asked by our customers is, “Why should I get my heating system checked before cold weather arrives?” As we approach the official end of summer, we thought that this would be a great question to tackle for you all.

As consumers, it seems as if we have a never ending list of things that we “should” do. We should go to the dentist every six months, we should get an oil change every 6,000 miles, and we should re-finish the deck every two years. But with the many items requiring our attention, how are we supposed to know what really needs maintained and how often we need to maintain it?

All furnace manufacturers recommend annual inspections and maintenance by qualified technicians like those here at McClintock Heating & Cooling. In fact, many manufacturer warranties contain language that states that damage caused by improper maintenance will not be covered. Does this mean that your entire warranty is going to be void if you do not get a yearly inspection? Maybe not, but the manufacturers understand that a well maintained unit prevents system failure in cold weather and can preserve and maintain the efficiency rating of the equipment, which is ultimately what we as consumers want – a system that works well and saves us money.

Now that you know why the yearly furnace check is important, you’re probably wondering when and how often it should be done. Most system breakdowns occur when you first turn the system on for the season, so the best time to get your heating system inspected would be in September or October of each year. When scheduling your appointment, keep in mind that it typically takes our Heating & Cooling Technicians an hour to an hour and a half per system to clean, check and service all components of your equipment. After the tune up is finished, your technician will furnish an inspection report and will advise you of any abnormalities that exist, and the best way to go about correcting them.

Often times, customers overlook having their system checked because unlike many of your other home appliances, the furnace is out of sight and out of mind, however, when the cold weather inevitably arrives, it will certainly be an appliance you need working well! Don’t let the cold of winter sneak up on you this year – be sure to call McClintock Heating and Cooling for your yearly furnace inspection!
